Secrets of Successful Job Hunting

In a time when more people than usual are looking for jobs, many wonder about the hidden tricks to landing a great position. There are still plenty of jobs on the market, and if you know where and how to look you’re sure to find them.

Think outside the window.
Think outside the job hunting box by thinking outside of your Internet windows. Although many jobs are found via the Internet, so many people are job hunting that employers are often flooded with online applications for every position, which makes it harder for people to stand out. Join professional associations, attend alumni events, and volunteer. Even activities such as attending a school parents’ meeting could help you in your job search. You never know who people might know, and making friends with the right people could lead to your next big business contact.

Be nice and friendly no matter where you are.
No matter where you go—whether it’s to a professional association meeting or the line at the grocery store—be friendly. A seemingly random chat with someone in the supermarket line might turn into a job lead, so always be polite.

Edit (and re-edit) your application materials.
Go over your resume and any cover letters with a fine tooth comb. Ask friends and respected colleagues to read them as well and get their input on wording, content, and especially grammar. If it comes down to a decision between you and someone else, don’t let yourself go to the “no” pile just because of a typo or misused verb. Make sure every detail is perfect.

Set yourself apart.
If you land an interview, think about what will set you apart as a candidate. Interviewers are often overwhelmed with hiring decisions, and after seeing so many applicants, they sometimes have a hard time remembering certain interviews and telling people apart. Be friendly and genuine, and make sure you have really done your research before you show up. Be prepared with winning answers to common questions, and have a few stories ready about great thing you have done. The more unique and memorable you are, the better.

Look sharp.
Most people judge based on appearances, so when you attend meetings or professional events, make sure you’re looking your best and most professional. Always dress to the highest denominator. If a networking event calls for business casual, try to dress more business than casual. Having a neat appearance will make you seem more professional and could help you stand out.

There are jobs out there—just be on the lookout.
