Ten for 2010: Hot Job Predictions for the New Year

2009 was a rough year for the economy and job market, but many believe the New Year is going to ring in with a strong outlook for new jobs. No matter what the economy does, some fields and careers are generally stable and will always have needs for quality workers, and these jobs show lots of promise for 2010.

Computers and technology
Tech-worthy workers will be in demand. Network administrators, information systems security managers, and engineers are all vital in today’s businesses. As networks grow more complicated with evolving technologies and applications, such as cloud computing, VoIP, and Software as a Service, many companies will require more sophisticated data management. Security managers are also vital since hacking and identity thefts are a constant threat. Systems engineers who can maintain and develop technical software, hardware and infrastructure are also a must for thriving business.

Accounting and finance
Unfortunately, death and taxes are always a certainty and therefore fuel an ongoing need for accountants, compliance directors, and credit managers. Quality tax accountants are always in demand. Compliance directors, or professionals who help companies stay in line with Securities and Exchange Commission mandates and prepare for financial reporting standards, are also going to be in great need. Financial analysts who can evaluate financial plans and examine budgets and forecasts will also be valuable as people who can help maintain profitability.

Office and administrative support
People who can be organized and detail-oriented may have their pick of positions in 2010. Medical records clerks will be in demand as more medical facilities transition from paper to electronic records. Executive assistants who are prepared to perform a wide variety of job functions, from direct support of senior staff to general office management, will continue to be valuable. Customer service representatives with good attitudes and aptitude to learn are also vital for a company’s success since customer service is in demand whether the economy is good or bad.

Health care
The health care industry is always booming—people need care no matter what the economy is doing. A shortage of nurses and allied health workers means great job opportunities and security for nurses, dental assistants, pharmacists and others. Home health care and hospice care are also excellent industries.

The economy may never be predictable, but jobs are always out there. Keep your resume updated, network, stay positive, and keep an open mind. 2010 could be the year you land a brand new career.
